Bill Bukowski

“Landscape is a constant inspiration”

William Bukowski is a painter living in Mankato, Minnesota.  He has been teaching art at Bethany Lutheran College since 1980.  He graduated with an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1979 and taught one year at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

Bukowski paints primarily from life and for the past 11 years has concentrated on the garden imagery of Sibley Park in Mankato, Minnesota.  He is also working on a series of landscape paintings from the Red Jacket Trail near Mankato as well as a series of cottage paintings ongoing since 1977.

Though oil paint is his preference, he has also done work in fresco and egg tempera.  His painting philosophy and style have been strongly influenced by the European tradition and canon of painters from Giotto to Matisse.

William Bukowski has participated in more than 170 exhibitions and has paintings in many private and public collections.  Some of his public collections include the Minneapolis and St. Paul Children’s Hospitals, the Madison Art Center, the Waseca Art Center, the Worthington Art Center, Pathstone Living, the Otteson Museum, the University of North Dakota, the University of Minnesota, ISJ/Mayo Clinic, St. Joseph’s hospital, St. Paul, Fairview Riverside, Minneapolis and Bethany Lutheran College.

Life in a Day- The Artist’s Eyes

In the art-house film tradition, Bukowski looks at the struggles of the artist in the process of creation. Bukowski finds the garden inspirational to his art, and sees it as a metaphor for paradise.

This video was shown at an exhibition celebrating 30 years of teaching by Professor Bukowski at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota.  It was put together by Jeff Bukowski.
