The Student Concours – Sharon Sprung’s Class
Each year from January to May, student work at The Art Students League of New York is exhibited in The Student Concours. On view in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery at The League, 215 West 57thSt., New York, NY, these exhibits showcase the work of all the school’s students in every discipline (painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media). The Student Concours exhibitions are open to the public; most of the artwork is available for purchase.
The exhibition changes weekly in order to accommodate all the classes at the League. I dashed over after work on April 24th to attend the reception for The Student Concours – Sharon Sprung’s Painting Class, taking place the week of April 23, 2018.

One student work per class exhibition is deemed “best in show” and is awarded a “Red Dot.”
These works are re-exhibited in the annual Red Dot Exhibition. This year’s Red Dot Exhibition 2018 will take place on June 4 – June 15, also in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery. Traditionally, several pieces in the Red Dot show are purchased for the League’s Permanent Collection.

More About Classes at The League
The Art Students League of New York offers 100 atelier studio-based art classes taught by professional artists in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, welding and assemblage. Most classes work from the live model.
Registration is by the month, though you can start at any time. There are no prerequisites.
Instructors teach in a myriad of media, styles and artistic philosophies. Curriculum continues an educational tradition based on the 19th century French atelier system of a master artist working alongside students.
Choose morning, afternoon, late afternoon, or evening classes; or attend on the weekend—whatever fits your schedule. Their supportive community is diverse in age, background and experience: students strive together to learn.
The Art Students League of New York also hosts several hundred weekend and week-long workshops each year. League instructors and prominent visiting artists work with intimate groups of about a dozen students on a particular aspect of art-making (such as plein air painting) or a specific medium or technique (such as egg tempera or color spot painting). Workshops are held at the League’s 57th Street location, or at the Vytlacil Campus.
