Corot: the Painter and his Models is the first exhibition in Paris dedicated to the artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot since the great retrospective of the Grand Palais held in 1996. On view February 8 – July 8, 2018 at the Musée Marmottan Monet, 2 rue Louis-Boilly, Paris
Interrupted Reading, c. 1870 by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, oil on canvas mounted on board, 36¼ x 25⅝ inches The Art Institute of Chicago
Presented at the Musée Marmottan Monet, it brings together an exceptional collection of figurative paintings and celebrates this most personal, but also potentially most modern part of the artist’s production. Known above all for his landscapes and paving the way for the Impressionists, Corot was also a painter of figures. However, he kept this part of his production in the secret of his studio – these works were scarcely diffused during his lifetime to a few friends, merchants or collectors.
